Adrienne Johnson Martin, MLK 50
Adrienne Johnson Martin is the executive editor for MLK 50, which focuses on poverty, power and public policy in Memphis and the systems that make it hard for workers to make ends meet – issues that Martin Luther King cared deeply about.
She spoke about her 30+ years in journalism and discusses the importance of MLK 50.
Why to listen: MLK 50 has the potential to do impactful things with its journalism. It is an organization worth learning more about.
Curtis Bunn, NBC BLK
Curtis Bunn is a writer for NBC BLK covering Black issues in America.
He’s been a journalist for more than 40 years, much of which was spent as a sportswriter
He spoke about his work as both a journalist and a novelist and why he finds his current job rewarding.
Why to listen: So you can hear the experience of a journalism lifer who has branched out and found many ways to fulfill his writing interests.
Amir Vera, CNN and The National Association of Black Journalists
Amir Vera is a breaking news editor for CNN. He’s also the vice-president for digital for the NABJ. He’s someone who made the transition from working in local news to working for one of the biggest national news organizations
Why to listen: Amir spoke passionately about advocacy, mentorship, and helping recently laid-off journalists. He has a well-rounded set of experiences in journalism from which he’s learned.
Adriana Chavira, Teacher
Adriana Chavira is a journalism teacher at Daniel Pearl Magnet High School which is located near Los Angeles. This episode was part of a celebration of the Journalism Education Association’s Scholastic Journalism Week.
Why to listen: Journalism education is vital to the future of the profession. Adriana has stories to tell about her experience, including her battle with administrative censorship.
Erin Reed: “Erin In The Morning” Newsletter Writer
Erin Reed is an independent journalist covering anti-transgender legislation and transgender life issues via a newsletter and website.
Why to listen: Anti-transgender legislation is a topic that is not covered well in mainstream media. Erin, who is transgender, is doing her best to fill the information gap.
